The Leon County Schools Dropout Prevention Program offers a variety of positive educational settings that encourage participating students in grades 1 -12 to achieve objectives in improving attendance and academic achievement. The overall goal of the 22 programs is to develop motivated successful learners, and reduce (ultimately eliminate) the dropout rate in Leon County.

The district’s schools provide positive educational programs that offer non-traditional paths for students to develop intellectually, physically, and emotionally. Careful consideration is given to addressing the special needs of students, parents and teachers at all levels of instruction

The Dropout Prevention program is designed to assist "at-risk" students in becoming productive members of society. We address this complex challenge by joining forces with the public and private community involving parents, businesses, and community and state agencies in providing positive, innovative educational alternatives for students who otherwise might not complete their schooling.

The district’s Dropout Prevention Office works closely with Leon School Volunteers (LSV) to provide classroom assistance in the form of speakers, tutors, and mentors. In addition, classroom volunteers are recruited from community groups and service organizations to allow students even more individualized instruction and attention. Other collaborative efforts positively impacting students include: Partners for Excellence Program, School To Work, Communities In Schools.

Among the successful programs in Leon County Schools are: Alpha-Riley Elementary, Quantum at Belle Vue, Godby High School Performance – Based Diploma Program, and the School for Applied Individualized Learning (S.A.I.L.).

Other successful Program include: TAPP-Teenager Parent Program at Rickards, Second Chance, and Lively Academy of Academics and Technology.

With the renewed focus on reading, writing and mathematics and the event of Senate Bill 1956, Leon County Schools is addressing academic success of all students in a variety of ways. (1) Students who are not experiencing academic success will have an individual academic improvement plan or an AIP done in consultation with parents. Areas of need are addressed with a variety of instructional strategies. The focus is on academic success of each student – whatever it takes!

The Leon County Dropout Prevention Program is comprehensive and positively impacts students on all levels in Leon County.
